Safe Steps
Safe Steps works to combat anxiety in children by teaching them how to safely walk to school and deal with emergencies, while supporting parents and building community.
This project was completed while I was a student at UNC Charlotte and showcased in the “Launch” Fall 2025 BFA show in the Lambla Gallery.
Posters
Safe Steps posters are to be displayed in schools where children wait to be dismissed for the day. The four posters provides children with quick checklists as daily reminders of how they should conduct themselves on their way home, while also reminding them of their emergency plans.
The posters cover road safety, bike/scooter safety, their “safe places,” and remind them to practice their personal information. Additionally, one of the posters provides children with a confidence boost that can be read before dismissal. The information is presented with a large font for the kids and then goes into more detail for the administrators to review with the kids.
Social Media
Safe Steps has a secondary initiative called Let Them Walk, a social media campaign that persuades parents to teach their children how to walk to school and provides ideas for the community to get involved. Each carousel post presents information in chunks, making it easier to process and less overwhelming. The use of photography helps to break up the content on the page while still adhering to the overall look of the brand.
Sidewalk Chalk
Safe Steps sidewalk chalk is an activity for kids and parents to do together with the goal of creating a fun environment to walk to school. The canvas is their driveway, sidewalk, neighbors sidewalk, school sidewalk and the subject is games and challenges to complete on their route to school such as hopscotch, hopping into shapes, or balancing on a drawn line. A booklet of inspiration comes in the box along with space to sketch ideas. Also included in the pack is a set of flashcards parents can use by filling in their information and practicing with their child. Every child decorating their sidewalk contributes to creating a colorful, fun and strong community.
On Display
Safe Steps was displayed in Lambla Gallery at UNC Charlotte Nov 21st – Dec 5th 2025. After the show, the posters were donated to Tega Cay Elementary School in Fort Mill, SC.
